The word "Presbyterian" comes from a Greek word meaning "elder" and refers to the way the church is governed. Found in the Bible, government by elders was reintroduced during the Protestant Reformation. This representative pattern of government became the model for the U.S. Constitution. Presbyterians are part of a larger body of Christians around the world. We join with other Christian denominations in affirming the Bible as the Word of God and our authority for faith and practice. We affirm the creeds and confessions of the Reformed church, which represents our common understanding of what the Bible teaches. However, we believe that Christians must be governed by their own consciences before God. We claim God's covenant promises of salvation through baptism of believers and their children (Acts 16:14,15,33). We welcome any who call on the name of Jesus to join us in celebrating the Lord's supper. |
